Prerequisites: Concurrent registrarion or a grade of C in EE 345L

Course Contents: This is a senior-level undergraduate course in concurrent and distributed computing. It will expose students to theoretical as well as practical aspects of designing and implementing concurrent and distributed systems. The course assumes that the student knows programming. The course will have two non-programming, three programming assignments and a programming project. All programming assignments and projects will require use of Java. The course will cover concurrent and distributed programming aspects of Java; the students are expected to know the sequential aspects of Java. There will be one mid-term and one final exam. The following topics will be covered in the course:

Constructs in concurrent languages: threads, semaphores, monitors, wait and signals, inter-process communication.
Networking in Java: Sockets, Streams, Java RMI
Fundamentals of Concurrent Computing: Mutual Exclusion, Locking, Deadlocks, Wait-free synchronization, Transactions
Fundamentals of Distributed Computing: Logical clocks, Mutual Exclusion, Snapshots, Distributed Commit, Distributed Consensus
Protection and Security : RSA encryption scheme, Digital Signatures

Grading: 30 % Assignments, 20 % Exam 1 (in-class), 15% Term project, 5% Class presentation, 30 % Final Exam.

Concurrent and Distributed Computing in Java by Vijay K. Garg, Wiley & Sons, 2004. Note that this book is different from the ``Elements of Distributed Computing'' book.
