Our current research interests include giant nonlinear optical effects in metamaterials, quantum cascade lasers, and other engineered and/or low-dimensional structures, sub-wavelength resolution microscopy in mid- and far-infrared, development and application of mid-IR and THz radiation sources and detectors, and plasmonic devices.

Our work is supported by AFOSR, ARO, DARPA, DOE, NSF, the Robert A. Welch Foundation, and the Texas Board of Higher Education Norman Hackerman Advanced Research Program.

Sep. 3, 2014 - Our paper "External cavity terahertz quantum cascade laser sources based on intra-cavity frequency mixing with 1.2-5.9 THz tuning range " by Y. Jiang et al. has been published in Journal of Optics.

July 30, 2014 - Our paper "Electrically-tunable polaritonic metasurfaces with ultrafast response time" by J. Lee et al. has been published in Advanced Optical Materials.

July 11, 2014 - Our paper "Broadly tunable monolithic room-temperature terahertz quantum cascade laser sources" by S. Jung et al. has been published in Nature Communications.

July 3, 2014 - Our paper "Giant nonlinear response from plasmonic metasurfaces coupled to intersubband transitions" by J. Lee et al. has been published in Nature.

June 8-13, 2014 - Seungyong Jung, Jongwon Lee, and Feng Lu present their research at CLEO-QELS.

April 23, 2014 - Our paper "Experimental investigation of terahertz quantum cascade laser with variable barrier heights" by A. Jiang et al. has been published in Journal of Applied Physics.

Mar. 26, 2014 - Jongwon Lee and Seungyong Jung received the best graduate student poster award and the best postdoctoral poster award, respectively, at the UT Austin Center for Nano- and Molecular Science and Technology 13th annual Nano Night poster session.

Feb. 2-6, 2014 - Mikhail Belkin and Seungyong Jung give one invited and two contributed talks on THz and mid-IR photonics technology at SPIE Photonics West.

Feb. 1, 2014 - Our paper "Room-temperature terahertz sources with MOVPE grown quantum cascade lasers" by K. Vijaraghavan et al. has been published in IEEE Photonics Technology Letters.

January 2014 - Prof. Mikhail Belkin has been selected as 2014 Tour Speaker for the Society of Applied Spectroscopy

Jan. 31, 2014 - Feng Lu received Ben Streetman award for his work on nanoscale mid-IR microscopy based on detecting molecular expansion forces

Jan. 16, 2014 - Our paper "Tip-enhanced infrared nanospectroscopy via molecular expansion force detection" by Feng Lu, Mingzhou Jin, and Mikhail Belkin has been published in Nature Photonics.
