Our current research interests include giant nonlinear optical effects in metamaterials, quantum cascade lasers, and other engineered and/or low-dimensional structures, sub-wavelength resolution microscopy in mid- and far-infrared, development and application of mid-IR and THz radiation sources and detectors, and plasmonic devices.

Our work is supported by AFOSR, ARO, DARPA, DOE, NSF, the Robert A. Welch Foundation, and the Texas Board of Higher Education Norman Hackerman Advanced Research Program.

June.22, 2016 - Our collaborative work with Gennady Shvets and Rainer Hillenbrand groups on imaging mid-IR optical field and optically-induced Ohmic losses distribution in chiral nanoresonators has been published in Nature Communications.

Mar.8, 2016 - Our paper "Ultrathin gradient nonlinear metasurface with a giant nonlinear response" by N. Nookala et al. has been published in Optica.

Feb.18, 2016 - Our paper "Spectroscopic Study of Terahertz Generation in Mid-Infrared Quantum Cascade Lasers" by Y. Jiang et al. has been published in Scientific Reports.

Dec.5, 2015 - Aiting Jiang and Feng Lu receive their PhD degrees. Congratulations, Dr. Jiang and Dr. Lu!

Nov.10, 2015 - A collaboration work with Andrea Alu group on Nonlinear Pancharatnum-Berry Metasurfaces was published in Phy. Rev. Lett.

Oct.29, 2015 - Prof. Mikhail Belkin was elected OSA Fellow.

Oct.19, 2015 - Prof. Mikhail Belkin received Jack Kilby/Texas Instruments Endowed Faculty Fellowship.

Oct.2, 2015 - A review paper on room-temperature THz QCL technology by Mikhail Belkin and Federico Capasso has been published in Physica Scripta.

June.29, 2015 - Our paper "Widely tunable terahertz source based on intra-cavity frequency mixing in quantum cascade laser arrays " by A. Jiang et al. has been published in Applied Physics Letters.

April.29, 2015 - Our paper "Recent Progress in Widely Tunable Single-Mode Rood Temperature Terahertz Quantum Cascade Laser Sources " by S. Jung et al. has been published in IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Quantum Electronics.

Feb. 4, 2015 - Our recent article "Ultrafast electrically tunable polaritonic metasurfaces" was selected for the Best of Advanced Optical Materials - 2014 edition.

Jan. 30, 2015 - Our recent article "External cavity terahertz quantum cascade laser sources based on intra-cavity frequency mixing with 1.2-5.9 THz tuning range" has been selected by the editors of Journal of Optics for inclusion in the exclusive 'Highlights of 2014' collection. Articles are chosen on the basis of referee endorsement, novelty, scientific impact and broadness of appeal.

Nov. 20, 2014 - Our paper on fast modulation in mid-IR metasurfaces has appeared in Advanced Optical Materials, and featured on the inside front cover.

Sep. 3, 2014 - Our paper "External cavity terahertz quantum cascade laser sources based on intra-cavity frequency mixing with 1.2-5.9 THz tuning range " by Y. Jiang et al. has been published in Journal of Optics.
