A standard practice for reading papers to fully understand them is to read them 3 times. a. Read the easy parts first: abstract, introduction, conclusion b. Read the entire paper, marking confusing sections c. Read again, it should start to make sense 2. As you read, a. Write down the important points b. Note anything you do not understand c. Summarize the paper 3. As this is a concepts and principles course, important clues will be found in the abstract, introduction and conclusions. A well- written paper will use these components to summarise the important aspects of the paper and the rest of the paper to amplify the (a general guideline, but not foolproof) Classroom participation 1. If there is something you do not understand -- ASK! There are no stupid questions!!!! 2. If you have a relevant comment, experience, anecdote -- SPEAK! Participation will make the class better!!!!
