About Me

I am presently pursuing my PhD in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin. I joined UT Austin in Fall, 2007 after completing my Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering from Indian Institue of Technology, Kharagpur. At UT Austin I work in the Computer Aided Testing (CAT) Lab under Prof. Nur Touba.

Research

My research is mainly focussed on fault tolerant systems and their design principles. I'm looking at improved ideas for CAD for fault tolerance. I'm also interested in Design For Testability (DFT) and VLSI testing in general.
Currently I'm working on enhancing error correcting codes (ECC) for semiconductor memory operating under low voltage, low power conditions and on compacting test-data in presence of unknowns.

    Resources

HSpice: This is a comprehensive manual for HSpice commands. Some more HSpice documentation can be found here.
Algorithms: The video lectures from the algorithms class of MIT proved quite helpful to me.
Similar classes at Berkeley, Stanford, UIUC, Cornell.
Java: The best place to go when one needs any Java-related help is the Sun Java tutorials.
C/C++: A useful reference for C/C++ functions is this Wiki. It doesn't include aome of the advanced functions but nevertheless a handy reference to have.
Perl: This is one scripting language I use extensively. And the Perl Monks have bailed me out many a times when I needed help with Perl. Another tutorial which is also quite resourceful.
VLSI: EE Times and DeepChip.com are two great resources for the latest trends in VLSI design and CAD. AnandTech.com is another good website if you're interested in the technical details of common electronic devices.

    Personal

Growing up - I have been born and brought up in Kolkata, the "City of Joy". Some of my fondest memories of growing up in Kolkata involve playing cricket and soccer in the streets. Then there was Durga Pujo and the all day long madness-eating-fooling around with my school friends! Now that I'm in a country where cricket's twisted version is almost considered religion and Durga Pujo is barely a weekend affair, I really miss those days!
Cricket was and will be my first love in sports. But since joining grad school, I've been more into soccer and find it very invigorating, though these days for various reasons I seldom get to kick a ball around.
KGP days - While at IIT Kharagpur, I dabbled in many things. But it was the performing arts that always attracted me. I used to be a regular in Inter-hostel Drama competitions. Some of my favourite playwrights and thespians were Bratya Basu, Badal Sarcar, Utpal Dutt, Bertold Brecht.
Photo-story - Now that my casual hobby of photography has turned a little more serious, I got myself a camera to better suit my needs (read indulging myself). It's a Nikon D90. Fantastic camera! Still very much on a learning curve before I can fully utilise its enormous capability. Previously I had a Canon S5 IS. An excellent camera for those just starting out on digital photography, though I believe Canon has discontinued it. You can find some of my photos in my web-album.
DP review might interest you if you're a camera buff or looking to procure a new one.
Books & Movies - The one thing that has been more or less a constant my entire life is my love of books. From comics to serious novels, I love 'em all! A few I can read over and over (and believe me I do!) are The Hungry Tide, The Kite Runner, Not Without My Daughter, Chacha-kahini, Kalbela, most Feluda and Prof. Shonku stories, Hercule Poirot, The Old Man and the Sea and the favourite of them all, Les Miserables.
I have been taken to movies since my college days. I like too many movies to even list them here. My most recent watch was District 9. It provides a different perception of possible human-alien interaction, thoroughly recommended. Although a more patient watch than some of the snazzier alien flicks.
