Adaptive Transmission Scheme Selection for MIMO Systems

Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology is a promising solution for future wireless communications systems to increase spectral efficiency and link robustness. Several MIMO schemes have been proposed thus far, based on multiplexing or diversity techniques. In this contribution we present a novel adaptive algorithm to switch across multiplexing and diversity schemes, depending on the spatial selectivity of the channel. The switching criterion relies on a metric derived from the spatial correlation matrices, used as an indicator of the channel spatial selectivity. Performance results show significant gain in throughput and reduced error rate compared to conventional fixed transmission schemes
