Welcome Prospective Students!
Guidelines for prospective graduate students entering my research group
Thank you for your interest in my research, WNCG, and The University of Texas at Austin. I work in the CommNets and Circuits areas of ECE. If you are interested in working with me, please specify my name and these areas on your application. If you let me know you have applied, I will be on the lookout for your application.
Although these research areas are ones I'm currently working on, I have many more ideas, and I enjoy crafting research projects that match a student's passion and goals while addressing the needs of our sponsors and the future needs of the wireless industry.
If you are interested in working with me, please consider that I am looking for a student who would have most, if not all, of the following attributes:
- A GPA near the top of their class at one of their country's top universities as well as other top academic credentials. GRE scores are less important to me, although the ECE program requires a minimum score in order to be accepted. Glowing recommendation letters from faculty mentors are also important.
- An aptitude for fundamental research and a strong sense of curiosity. I'm especially interested in students who have completed research achievements early in their career. Most post-BS students I recruit are near valedictorians and have done at least one interesting research project during their undergrad. Most post-MS students have already published a paper in a top IEEE journal or conference. I also like students who have practical experience and who enjoy "real world" problems.
- A desire to be a leader in their field, whether as a professor, an entrepreneur, a top researcher, or an industry executive.
- A desire to help others, to communicate effectively, and to work in teams to make great things happen.
- Although it is by no means a requirement, a fellowship or other supplemental funding may certainly help your chances.
Generally speaking, I do not offer Research Assistant positions to students I have not worked with previously at UT. Incoming graduate students will usually receive a Teaching Assistant position until they have demonstrated the ability to succeed in the classroom and in research, at which point they will be appointed as an RA.

Send your resume in the text of the email - no attachments, please. Resumes should be easy to read and include your GPA, GRE scores, awards, and publications. Also include in your email the reasons why you are interested in working with me, specifically, and what you are most passionate about as an engineer and as a human being.
