Announcements: Cellular Business Trends and Ecosystem
- Trends
- Global mobile data traffic, which accounts for about half of the Web traffic today, increased
- Human cellular subscribers would like higher data rates and better reliability, but
don't want to pay more per month for their cellular service
- Mobile phone subscribers worldwide: 7.378B in 2016, 7.677B in 2018, 7.967B in 2020, and 8.290B in 2022 (estimated)
- To provide high-speed 5G millimeter wave band coverage (24 GHz and higher),
100x more basestations are needed vs. 4G/5G below 6 GHz for same coverage area
- Wavelength is c / f where c is the speed of light and f is the frequency,
- Antenna length in one dimension is proportional to wavelength
- Many more antennas needed in mmWave frequencies to overcome the high pathloss
- How to increase the number of devices on the cellular network at a faster rate?
