EE 445S Real-Time Digital Signal Processing Laboratory - Lecture 18
Lecture by Prof. Brian L. Evans
Announcements
- The first two multicarrier communication standards were finalized in 1995:
- ETSI ETS 300 401, Radio Broadcasting Systems for Digital Audio
Broadcasting (DAB), Feb. 1995.
Note: DAB service was available in Europe in 1996.
- ANSI T1.413-1995 Discrete Multitone (DMT) Standard for
Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) Modems, Aug. 1995.
Note: ADSL lines were available in Austin in 1997, and
interoperable commercial modems were available in 1999.
- For customer premise equipment for ADSL, i.e. modems for the home:
- ADSL modems reached 62M units in 2007 and 70M units in 2008.
Modem choices include ADSL1, ADSL2, ADSL2+.
ADSL2+ modems can provide up to 24 Mbps downstream in
a point-to-point connection.
- DOCSIS 3.0 standard approved for cable modems.
Minimum of 160 Mbps downstream and 120 Mbps upstream, shared by the users
on the local area network.
[December 2007].
- In 2009, DSL had $100B in revenue of the $164B fixed
broadband service market that also includes cable modems
and fiber broadband.

Lecture
- Lecture slides on ADSL Transceivers in
PowerPoint format.
Supplemental Material
Equalizers:
ADSL Simulator:
- LabVIEW ADSL2 Simulator.
Version 1.1 (May 24, 2006) implements a discretized,
physical layer simulator for an ADSL2 system.
The structure and default parameters of the transmitter,
channel model, and receiver follow the ADSL2 ITU-T G.992.3 standard.
A standalone executable demonstration that does not need a
LabVIEW license is also available.
