EE 313 Linear Systems and Signals - Lecture 1
Lecture by Prof. Brian L. Evans
Before Lecture
Announcements
- Lecture slides on Introduction & Sinusoids in
PowerPoint format.
- Fall 2024 Part 1
- Goals. Students hope to learn more about
- audio processing including analog-to-digital (A/D) and digital-to-analog (D/A) conversion
- video processing
- analog music
- computer vision
- sensor feedback
- common filtering techniques
- how to transmit information wirelessly
- Example: Speech compression and decompression
- Take 10-40ms of speech samples.
- Develop a signal processing model of the production of the speech
- Model the air coming out of the lungs and going through the glottis as a signal generator (input)
- Model the change in the air coming from the glottis by the mouth and nose as a system (system)
- Output of the system approximates the speech samples
- Compress the values of the parameters for the signal generation and the system
- Transmit the compressed values of the parameters instead of the speech samples (about 8:1 compression)
- Fall 2024 Part 2
Supplemental Material
- Fall 2023 Part 2
- Fall 2021 Part 1
- Periodicity
- Student goals:
proficiency in Matlab;
intuitive understanding of signals;
learn more about applications; and
describe signals by looking at them
- Applications:
speech processing;
image processing;
5G & 6G technologies;
USB & PCI Express;
automotive sensors (e.g. engine control);
optical communications; and
quantum computing.
- Fall 2021 Part 2
- Signals (review)
- patterns of variations; waveform; measurement of a physical phenomenon
- examples: radio, USB, HDMI, UART, 4G, 5G, fiber optic, speech, audio, image, and video signals
- Systems (review)
- change or convert a signal; generate a signal
- examples: radio, USB, HDMI, UART, 4G, 5G, and fiber optic transmitter/receiver
