#Abstract
We describe implementation and properties of
clocks in distributed systems.
These clocks are useful for keeping information about causality
rather than physical time. Depending on the level of information
required, logical clocks, vector clocks, direct dependency clocks
or matrix clocks may be useful.
This paper is intended to be a tutorial on clocks in distributed systems.
It not only provides algorithms for implementing clocks, but also
a proof technique for showing properties of clock-like algorithms in
a distributed system.
