The Internet
The internet is a worldwide network of computer networks. These computers are connected by hardware devices such as cables and by communication software.
The common network protocol is called TCP/IP.
The UT campus network is known as UTnet.
UT has over 26,000 campus computers connected to UTnet (internet-ready computers). There are more network-connected computers than telephones.
The internet began in the 1960s, as the ARPANET. The concept was of a decentralized, blastproof, packet-switching network that would be extremely rugged.
