Countries visited in 1996 (in order):
Australia and Fiji.
Fiji doesn't compare to Hawaii as far as natural scenery, even though it is no slouch. But the
warmth of the people and the ease in which the hordes of tourists can be
left behind more than compensate. We spent our entire time on the island
of Kandavu, which is a thin, long (50 mile) island populated by less than
10,000 people living in about 100 small villages. There are no roads, the
only mode of transport was boat and foot. We stayed in a Fijian village
which accomodates travellers, called "Albert's place". The Fiji photos below
are of Albert's Place (and a nearby village).

This is a view of Albert's place from above. The palms are so thick that
you can't even see the village, but it is directly below. The
discoloration of the water offshore marks the beginning of a large coral
reef. Excellent for diving and snorkelling.

A sort of classic South Seas photo... Mmmm... Coconut. This is directly
outside of my thatched hut.

Dinner with a nearby village one night. They made us a Fijian feast including fresh lobster, lobster curry, and as much kava as we could drink. We chipped in $10 to help them build a church.

The omnipresent kava bowl...
