New Announcements
- The order and dates for the presentations have been uploaded in blackboard in a xls file. Please, let me know in case you have trouble accessing it. All presentations should not last longer than 8 minutes + 1 minute for questions. Tip: estimate about 1 minute for each slide. All students need to participate in their team presentation. That is, if you are working in pairs, both you and your partner need to present a portion of your work. The presentations are graded considering a maximum score of 100. Errors or issues take out points from this maximum score of 100. The most relevant rules I consider when grading the presentations are:
Minor error = -1
Average error = -3
Conceptual/important error = -5
Presentation exceeding 9 minutes long = -5 for the first minute + (-3) for each additional minute thereafter.
Format issues (e.g. small font or plot that cannot be read) = -3
Incomplete presentation = -5
Unclear presentation (e.g. difficult to understand what you are trying to say) = -3 to -5 depending on the severity
These are the main grading rules that I will apply for the presentations. I may take out points for some other unexpected issue not listed here but, in almost all presentations I listened in the past, these rules contemplate all possible situations and errors that may or may not end up making you loose some points.
- All students need also come on the day they are not presenting but others are presenting. An absence on the day when you are not presenting without previous notification to me will be penalized with 5 points substracted from your presentation score.

Old Announcements

- Office hours on Monday 11/26 from 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm are canceled.
- A sample presentation based on this sample paper can be downloaded from here.
- The papers are graded considering a maximum score of 100. Errors or issues take out points from this maximum score of 100. The most relevant rules I consider when grading the final projects are:
Minor error = -1
Average error = -3
Conceptual/important error = -5
Missing references = -5
Few references, not called = -3
References wrongly referenced = -4
Excessive use of references (i.e. implicit paraphrasing) = -10
Missing part = -5
Part short or little insights= -3
paper short = -3
paper too short = -5
paper longer than 10 pages long = -3 (-2 extra point for each extra page over 11 pages long so a 12 page long paper will loose 5 points and a 13 page long will loose 7 points). References do not count for the total page length. All other content counts towards the 10-page long limit.
writing style or plot unclear = -2 to -5 (depending the severity)
format issues (e.g. fig unclear) = -2
These are the main grading rules that I will apply for the final project. I may take out points for some other unexpected issue not listed here but, in almost all papers I graded in the past, these rules contemplate all possible situations and errors that may or may not end up making you loose some points.
- Homework assignment #5 can be downloaded from here.
- On 11/21 I will have my office hours from 1 pm to 2 pm.
- Homework assignment #4 can be downloaded from here
- Comment about HW#1: In order to address a question asked in a recent lecture class regarding how to develop and simplify a dynamic model for a fuel cell, I have rushed to prepare a document that I hope will serve to answer this question. However, I decided to also use this opportunity in order to provide a rough example of what your final project may look like. Please, don't consider this document as being in a perfect stage of development. Since I wanted to have it finished quickly for you it may still have some errors (typos, writing style issues, may be even a missing reference here or there) but, nevertheless, it should still provide a general idea of the structure of your final paper and how to approach writing it. That is, don't take this document  as a literal word by word instruction manual to writing your project report but rather as a general guide (e.g. I am quite sure I am not following some of the tips in the paper writing tips ppt such as use of prepositional phrases and first person). Of course, if you find errors or have suggestions, please, feel free to let me know about them. Access this document here.
- Another comment about HW#1 (and future homework assignments): Please, notice that one of the course requirements listed in the syllabus is that students should have a "Strong familiarity with at least one computer simulation software." So, unfortunately, not achieving successful results in a simulation due to not being familiar with a simulation software package may make you loose some points in your homework assignment grades.
- The new due date for current homework assignment (#2) is postponed to 10/22.
- Homework assignment #3 can be downloaded from here
- I have posted the second homework assignment with weeks 6 to 8 class material. Please, see below.....
