	 Can we make the assumption that the user will enter a character and 
	 then a number, or should we deal with the special case where the user

The simple answer is no.  Not all players are as savvy as you.  So you will 
have to check to make sure the first character typed refers to a legitimate 
row, and the second character typed is a legitimate decimal digit.
