Wed, 25 Aug 2021, 21:11 Is it okay to use the 2nd edition of the textbook

My students,

Since this is the first email that I am responding to, I should let you in on
what I do with email. If the email is not relevant to anyone else, I simply
answer the person who wrote to me. But if I think others may benefit from the
email and my response, I delete everything that identifies the letter writer,
and forward the email and my response to the class. So, ...

A student writes:

> Hello Dr. Patt,

> A friend of mine has the second version of your textbook that he's willing to
> let me borrow for the semester. Could you please tell me if that would suffice
> or should I pay extra for the third version?

Thanks for the question.

I completely overhauled the examples and explanations of major parts
of the book for the 3rd edition. I also made changes to the LC-3.
Using the 2nd edition will put you at a significant disadvantage
with respect to the material of Chapter 3,4,5,8,9, and 10, and to a
much smaller extent with respect to the material of Chapter 2,6,7.
The 2nd edition was done in 2003. The 3rd edition was done in 2019.
After 16 yeears with the 2nd edition, I had a pretty good idea as to
how to explain things better.

These are the facts. It is up to you to decide whether to use the
2nd edition or the 3rd edition.

Good luck with EE306 and the rest of your courses.
