Sat, 13 Nov 2021, 02:30 unfortunately, more on cheating

My students,

I just got email from a student who cheated but received 90% on the second
programming lab. He was delighted that his cheating had not been detected.

The purpose of this email is to make sure everyone knows that the grade each
student initially received for programming lab #2 is the grade earned assuming
the solution submitted was the student's own work. That grade will be changed
to a 0 and the student will lose a full letter grade on his final grade in
the course if the student's solution was not his own work.

Why am I bothering the class with this? Very simply, if a student who cheated
sees a good grade for his program, I want to be sure that student does not
assume he got away with cheating, and be encouraged to cheat again. The truth
is he did not get away with it and after I have had a chance to review the
cheating scripts, he will be penalized severely if he cheated.

My hope is that by notifying everyone now that the grade they see for their
Lab #2 is true only if they did not cheat, students who think they got away
with cheating and are tempted to cheat again will be deterred from doing so.

Good luck with programming lab #3, the midterm next week, and the rest of
the course.

Stay safe.
