{check [Burt1 71-114] for HB and good historical background information}
[NEHGR 86:217-20] HB (probably the son of HB of Harberton, Co Devon, clothier, the testator of 1617), of Harberton, Co Devon, and of Roxbury and Springfield Mass, born probably 1595, died at Springfield.HB was taxed on land at harberton in the subsidy of 1624. He emigrated to NE, probably in the winter of 1638/9 or in the spring or summer of 1639, and probably also with his wife and his seven surviving children, 2 children having died in England. In NE he is found first at Roxbury Mass where his house was burned and the General Court made a grant of 8 pounds to the town in November 1639 because of the loss. In the following year he moved to Springfield, where he was clerk of the writs, although he did not record the births of his own children (at least 4) who were born in Mass.

Administration of the goods of Henry Burt of Abbots-Kerswell, Co Devon, was granted 1634.
The Burt family is found at Harberton, Co Devon in the early decades of the 17th century. A Henry Burd of Harberton died intestate not later than 28 April 1603, when the inventory of his estate was taken and the administration of his estate was granted 2 May 1603 to Joan Burd his widow who was to distribute to Walter and Jane her children such portion of the goods of the deceased as the Archdeacon (of Totnes) should think fit. [NEHGR 86:77] Inventory, taken 28 April 1603: a pair of `lumbres', 6s; ... his `woodinge' vessel ...; 6 silver spoons, ...; 1 piece of melly cloth, ...; total [torn].
The Walter Burd of Harberton, weaver, was undoubtedly the son of the deceased. No relationship has been proved between this Henry Burd and the Henry Burtt who was possibly the father of the NE settler. In fact, the surname Burd may be a form of Beard, which occurs in the neighborhood rather than a form of Burtt.
