[Gardiner 2] 1635, Lion Gardiner, engineer. ``In the year of our Lord 1635, July the 10th came I, LG and Mary my wife, from Woorden, a town in Holland, where my wife was born'', etc. Came in the Batchelor, Thomas Webb, master, of 25 tons; arrived Boston 28 November 1635. Went to Saybrook. Hovawan conveyed to him the Island afterward known as Gardiner's Island - the first English settlement in NY.
