[NHTR 11:9] 2 Sept 1662 - Elinor (Russel?) Glover pleaded on behalf of Mary Hitchcock (dau of Edward and Francis Hitchcock).
[Gillespie 164-168] Sailed from Ipswich, Co Suffolk, last of April 1634 in the Elizabeth (William Andrews, master), aged 24 (hebce born c 1610). Tentative conclusions are that HR is the sister of William Russell. HG had some sort of conflict with the First Congregational Church - nature unknown - that was reconciled in 1644. 4 january 1643 fined for "defect in their cock" 1 shilling. 1654 fined 20s for having 4 more swine that allowed. 1 of 183 that signed the oath of fidelity 1 July 1644. Freeman 1665; on October 1669 on the list of 91 New haven plantation freemen.
Had so much trouble with Thomas Thompson, his apprentice, that he brought the problem to the court in 1661. EG intervened on Mary Hitchcock's behalf in a charge of fornication.
HG was granted 6 acres within 2 miles in 1648; also purchased 10 acres from Francis Browne; in 1659, he bought 15 acres from John Wakeman. In the December 1680 allotments of the third division of land, HG is listed as head of household of two, personal estate of 563 pounds and received 120.5 acres, the 7th highest allotment. In 1685 on the list of proprietors. Held various town offices: townsman 60-62, 70, 75-81; treasurer 65; constable 65-6; juryman 65, 69, 70; fence viewer 44, 48, and 69; alternative deputy in 75; collector of ministry rate in 81. Referred to as "soap boiler of New haven". Had a warehouse on the west side of State Street, near Water Street. Had 7 children: Mary, Mercy, Hannah, John, Abigail, Abigail and Sarah.
