[Savage 2:315] Came from London to Boston 26 June 1637 in the company of Eaton and Davonport. Lived on the east side of the harbor. Sailed in January 1646 for London in the 'Phantom Ship'.
[Gillespie 195-206] In the Spring of 1637, a group of London merchants formed a company to establish a commercial settlement in the new world. On 26 June 1737, Davenport, Eatons, Hopkins, Gregson and others arrived at Boston; then sailed from Boston to Quinnipiac 30 March 1638. TG became the first treasurer of the New haven Colony.
In January 1645/6 the great ship "Fellowship" was loaded with cargo to establish a trading post at the mouth of the Deleware. Unwilling to wait for better weather, they began their journey that month. They had to cut through 3 miles of ice, loaded with 5000 pounds of cargo (in a ship of 100 tons), with 70 people aboard including Gregson, Turner, and Lamberton. Tradition has it htat 5 months after the ship sailed a remarkable apparition was observed in New haven harbor by a multitude of people. Longfellow commemorated the tragedy in "the Phantom Ship".
Gov Winthrop called TG "probably the chief man in the [New Haven] Colony after Eaton". 23 October 1640, TG was appointed "truck master" to barter with the Indians for venison. Mayy 1641, he was elected treasurer. In 1643, he had a houshold of 6 and a taxable extate of 600 pounds including 45 acres in the first division, 9 in the necke and 33 in the meadow, 133 in the second division. As there were 6 children, 2 must have been elsewhere. His land in the second division was on the east side of the river, hence the first settler of East Haven. Gregson's house was one of the 4 that excelled in stateliness. Inventories yeilded a gross estate of 490-06-06, net 364-03-04, but the distribution wsas not untill 2 April 1716!
In the third divisionin 1680, Mrs Gregson received 116 acres, with a household of 4 and a taxable estate of 500 pounds. In 1711, she was allotted 12 acres in the fifth division. JG's will is dated 5 February 1691/2 with an estave valued at 198 pounds.
8 children: Richard, Anna, Rebecca, Suzanna, Mary, Phebe, Abigail and Sarah.
