[Fairfield 1:290-1] magistrate for Stamford, May 1654, May 1655; Deputy to New Haven Legislature, May 1663; Deputy to Connecticut Legislature October 1670 and for Greenwich May 1673. Commissioner for Stamford and Greenwich 1667-81 and most of that period for Rye also. Will dated 14 April 1681 mentions wife Mary, ..., daughter Elisabeth Turney, ... Children from c1641 through 1662/3.

[Gillespie 226-236] One of Stamford's proprietors before the end of 1642 and was certainly in Stamford before 22 October 1645 when he purchased property from Richard Hardy. JH seems to have been an important figure in Stamford, holding various offices throughout his life: treasurer, deputy to the general court and general assembly, etc. 14 October 1669, JH was propounded as a freeman of Stamford. On 23 December 1670, first reference to JH as ``Mr.'', a title of high to induce JH to move there. His will is dated 14 April 1681 and proved 28 June 1681. He left, among other things, 12 pounds to each of his daughters, Elizabeth Turney, .... The Inventory was appraised at 312:01:06. JH and his wife Mary had nine known children: Samuel, Increase, Elizabeth, John Jr, Hannah, Bethia, Elisha, Jonathan, and Abigail.

[Gillespie 225-6] SH's will is dated 5 December 1643 in which his wife's name is given as Elizabeth. If she is the Elizabeth Holly who sailed from London in June 1635 in the ship Blessing, she either gave an incorrect age (30 years in one account and 20 in another) or she was not the mother of SH's son John, known to have been born in 1618. The first mention of SH is in 1639; Samuell Holley -- one dwelling house with Eightene Acars of Land on ye South side of Charles River within Cambridge Bounds, Bounded upon ye Southeast side upon Bush, Charles River Northeast, John Jacksone North West, Southwest Joineing to ye common sett out by Stakes. The land was beside the ancient road to Roxbury, in that part of Newtown (Cambridge, later Brighton), now a part of the city of Boston. EH later married John Kendall, and is considered to have been the Goody Kendall who was executed on a charge of witchcraft. The principal evidence was from a nurse who testified that Kendall did bewitch to death a child of Goodman Genings of Watertown. SH and EH had one child, John.
