Marriage noted in the Bridgeport Republican Standard, 3 February 1841, the New Haven Palladium, 3 February 1841, the Columbian Register, 6 February 1841, and the Hartford Times 6 February 1841 (where GHJ is listed as of Bridgeport and AL is listed of Guilford).
[Bridgeport1 196] Names George Johnson as a member of the 1st Congregational Church of Bridgeport in 1840 and 1841.
[Stratford1 2:783] The Pequonnock Lodge, No 4, of Bridgeport, of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows was founded on 11 June 1841 with a petition signed by George H. Johnson, John M. Wilson, Gilson Landon [GHJ's brother-in-law]. Samuel L. Eldred, and George Waters. The first meeting was in a small room in the upper story of 35 Wall St, but in January 1845, a larger hall was occupied at 407 Water St.
[Stratford1 2:817] lists a George H. Johnson as president of The White Manufacturing Company [but it is not at all clear whether this is our GHJ or not] which was located at 95 Cannon St and which produced coach lamps, carriage mountings and hardware. It was started in 1832 as Rippen and Sturges, succeeded by White and Bradley, and merged into the present company in 1861 with a capital of $40,000.

[Ellington] Captain Asahel Johnson came from Stafford into Ellington about 1830 and settled in what was then called McKinney St; he had a family of 6 children, 2 sons and 4 daughters. The sons left Ellington and settled in Bridgeport; they are both dead. One daughter married a Mr Sears of Vernon; one married William H. Cogswell, then of Vernon; one married Frank Gowdy of East Windsor; the other married and went west. Mr. Johnson was a representative in the General Assembly from Ellington; he was also Selectman. He died about 1860; his widow has been dead some years.
[Stafford1] In property transactions dated 25 March 1820 and 11 April 1820 (Book 13 pages 292 and 306) Asel Johnson is listed as from heirs of Nathaniel Hyde: Alvan Hyde, Lovina Hyde, Nathaniel Hyde, Joesph P. Pinney and Martha Pinney his wife, all of Stafford and Asahel Johnson and Sarah Johnson of Ellington in Tolland ... 2 March 1829.

[Will - document dated 5 January 1861] I Asel Johnson of Ellington in Tolland County Connecticut do humbly make and declare this to be my last will and testament.
First = I desire that my just debts and funeral expenses be paid and I hereby authorize my executor herinafter named to sell lands instead of personal property to pay the same as he may deem just.
Second, I give devise and bequeath all my estate which I may have and posses of both real and personal property to Edward G. Hyde of upon the special trust following that is to say that out of the rents, profits, use interest and income of said estate. ASfter deducting all necessary repairs, charges, and taxes, he the said Edward G. Hyde shall furnish to my wife Sarah Johnson a good ample and sufficient support and circumstances during her natural life, so far as she shall need the same to render her in every way comfortable if the use of her dower in my estate shall not be sufficient for that purpose. An if all the said rents, profits, use and income of my estate shall not be sufficient to furnish my said wife everything which she may need as aforesaid - I hereby direct said trustee to expend so much of the principle of my said estate as shall be sufficient for that purpose -
Third, if during the life of my said wife the rents, profits, use interest and income of my said estate shall be more than sufficient for the support and maintenance of my said wife as aforesaid then it is my will tht said trustee shall annually distribute whatever may remain of siad rents, profits, use interest and income of my estate among my children Elizabeth Sears, Emiline Streeter, George H. Johnson, Martha C. Gowdy, and Catherine L. Johnson of the survivors of them as follows to wit said distributions to be made by said trustee to such of my said children as in his opinion shall stand most in need of the same for their support and to be made in proportion to their necessities.
Fourth, after the decease of my said wife Sarah Johnson it is my will that said trustee shall ammicably distribute all the said rents profits use interest and income of my said estate among such of my children or the survivors of them as in his opinion shall from time to time stand most in need of the same for their support the amount to be paid to each to be in proportion to their necessities. Provided after the death of my said wife if at any time any of my said children shall become reduced to actual want and all of the seaid rents profits use interest and income of my estate shall not be sufficient for their comfortable support I hereby direct my said trustee to expend so much of the principle of my estate as shall be necessary for that purpose.
Fifth, after the decease of all my said children it is my will and desire that said trustees shall distribute and pay over all the residue of my estate, both real and personal to my grandchildren to be divided among them equally share and share alike.
Sixth, I hereby authorize my said trustees to sell any of my said real and personal estate whenever such sales shall be deemed advisable for all parties and to reinvest the money arising from such sale or sales on goods and ample security.
Seventh, in case said trustees shall refuse to accept this trust or shalldisavow the execution of the same then the Judge of Probate for the District of Ellington shall have power to appoint some suitable person to be a trustee in his place who shall have the full power to perform the aforesaid trust.
Eighth, I hereby consitute and appoint Alvin P Hyde of Tolland to be the executor of this my last will and testament. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal and publish and declare this to be my last will and testament in the presence of the witnesses named below this first day of June AD 1852 Asel Johnson

I have personally appeared before Mr Dennis Fox who made solemn oath that the said Asel Johnson signer and sealer of the foregoing instrument signed the same and declaimed it to be his last will and testament in our presence and in the presence of Minnie Hyde and F W Perry the other two subscribing witnesses and that she by the name of Jennie [?] Hyde together with the other two subscribing witnesses subscribed the same as witnesses in the presence of the trustee and in the presence of each other. Know all then by these present that we William H. Cogswell of ellington in Tolland County and the state of Connecticut as principle and Wm T Cogswell of Vernon in said county as ---- are holden and family bound jointly and severally into Caleb Hopkins, Judge of the Court of Probate for the district of Ellington in the final sum of fifteen thousand dollars to be paid to the said judge or to his certain attorney or successor in said office to the which payment will and truly be done, we the said obligors do bind oushrselves and each of us, our heirs, executors, and administrators, and each and every one of them for an in the whole sum aforesaid finally by these present, the consideration of this obligation is such that if the above bounden William H. Cogswell who was appointed and has accepted the trustee ship created by the last will and testament of Asel Johnson late of Ellington aforesaid deceased now therefore if the said William H Cogswell shall perform his duty as said trustee according to the law and the provision of said will then this bond to void, otherwise good and valid.

[Ellington] Eli Johnson, brother of Asahel, came from Stafford into Ellington in 1830; he was educated a lawyer, but never practiced. He never married; he died about 1878. There is no member of the Johnson Families now living [in 1889].
[Ellington2 32] Eli Johnson died 9 January 1877, age 79 years [Hartland (West) 2nd Congregational Church DG:129] Eli Johnson died 8 June 1883, Tolland, age 91.

[Johnson2 5] Came to NE in 1634 and was in Charlestown until 1658. Then he went to Haverhill where he was the first permanent smithy. He was prominent and influential, a tithingman and deacon in the church, a proprietor, selectman, juror, moderator of twon meetings and in 1691 representative to the Great and General Court of the Colony. He was also a lieutenant in the militia. He married 2) Mrs Sarah (Kezar) Gillo of Lynn, 3 March 1675, who died in childbirth 24 July 1676; 3) Catherine (Skipper) Maverick, 8 September 1680, widow of John Maverick of Boston. Killed in the Indian Attack with his wife and others; his great grandchild, Lydia was in his wifes arms and survived. Children: John, Elizabeth, Ruhamah, William, Sarah, Ruth, Ruth, Timothy, Mary and Rebeccah.
