[Savage 4:352] Boston, came in the Planter 1635, aged 26, with wife Elizabeth, aged 23. Said to have come from Northampton. Wife joined the church 24 July 1636. Soon removed to New Haven and became a man of consequence. Estate given to be administered June 1673.
[Gillespie 479-488] The Planter left Gravesend 2 April 1635, bound for Boston -- aboard were 3 Tuttle families: William, Richard and their cousin John (Isabel Tuttle, 70, was with Richard's family; Wm and Elizabeth, 26 and 23, and their children: John 3.5, Ann 2.25, and Thomas 3 months. WT settled in Charlestown, Richard in Boston, and John in Ipswich. In 1635, WT was the surveyor and was granted the right to build a windmill. 4 June 1639 WT and family joined the New Haven group and was one of the 111 original signers of the fundamental agreements. There he bought various pieces of land. The original Tuttle homestead became the sight of the first Yale college buildings. In 1659, WT acquired land from the estate of the late Gov. Eaton which was the property settled on his son Thomas in 1670.
In the first division, 1640, WT had a household of 7 and a taxable estate of 400 pounds -- he received 37.5 acres, 7.5 in the necke, and 26 acres of meadowland. In the second division, WT received 107 acres and assessed at 450 pounds. In the third division, 1680, WT had died.
WT was a husbandman and merchant. He served on various committees for the town. For example, in 1668, WT was on the committee to settle the boundary dispute with Milford and in 1672, he was one of the signers of the agreement settling this dispute. He filled only a few offices: fence viewer in 40, 44, 63 & 70; constable in 1666/7; juror in 69, 71 and 72. He was a freeman on the October 69 list.
WT was involved in numerous suits. His children, in particular, were involved in a very large number of problems -- for various lapses of behavior, etc.
WT died intestate between 20 February and 27 August. June 73 inventory was 499-08-06. ET lived with her son Nathaniel until her death wnd her inventory was valued at 294-07-03.
