[NEHGR 120:21-25] James Watson of Home-upon-Spalding Moor was botn about 1530. His wife is unidentified and since she is not named in hiw will probably predeceased him. Will is dated 10 July 1615 and probated last of May 1616. Perhaps 11 children.

[NEHGR 120:21-25] JW of Holme-upon-Spalding Moor was born probably about 1500, since ne was of ageto act as executor of his fdather's will in 1521, died July or August 1568. He appears on the Rental roll in 1528 with one of the largest rentals in the Manor. He held a messuage late in the tenure of William Sotheron, a flatt called Moreflatt a close called Dawburding etc, paying a year rental of 34s 8s [sic]. He also appears on the muster roll for Harthill Wapentake, probably made about 1538, as an archer with bowe and arrows.

His wife's name is unknown though perhaps she was a Sotheron, which would account for his holding of a messuage in the tenure of William Sotheron and for the clause in the will of Sir Thomas Sotheron of Beverly (a priest), dated 28 July 1550 and probated 15 April 1551 in which he leaves a ryall betwixt them to both John Watsons, also to John Watson an almerie and to Thomas Watson's wife a ryall to gether with other bequests to Sotherons, Milliingtons and Tomlinsons, all persons of Holme and in one way or another related.

JW's wife apparently died before 5 July 1568 when he made his will, for she is not mentioned in it. it was proved 31 Aug 1568. Besides his own children there were legacies to my brother Robert's children each 12d, to John Crosby's two sons, Thomas and James, each 12d, to William Watson on sack and one silver spoon, to James Watson [apparently no his onw son James] a pair of wharnes, to sister Annas [apparently Agnes, wife of John Crosby and mother of Thomas and James] one senlothe and a coverlet, to Barbara Boser a ewe. Sons Henry and Thomas Watson were the executors.

[NEHGR 120:21-25] John Watson of Holme-upon-Spalding Moor, whose will dated 3 Aug 1521 was probated 11 March 1521/2 (P and E York Wills, vol 9, fol 212). He directed that he be buried in the churchyard of Allhallow at Holme, provided for his wife and children and named his wife Mragaret and eldest son JohnWatson as executors. Witnesses were Sir Thomas Mownder, Robert Sotheron, George Grgham and Willm Granger. His wife was still living in 1528 when she appeared on the Rent Rolls of the Manor of Holme as holding In the Water End a messuage formerly of Thomas Westeby, a barn, a bovate of land, an acre of meadow in the Twelve Acres and LeBlanch farm, a parcel of meadow called Ferested, a close Called Brakan Close abuttin against Lylly Close, another close called the Waiste abutting on John Pyd's close, and a flatt in the Smithfields. Total rental - 37s 9d. This was the largest holding on the roll.
