[CWM] Allens came over about 1855-60; Pools came over about 1857 - when IPA was 14 years old. [Note: this conflicts with the cemetery inscriptions - IP 1838 - 1921 - at the cemetery on the Hanover-Versailles road.]
[CWM] Grandfather Allen's father must have been a name of considerable importance in Belfast for when there were severe riots, like those now taking place, the Catholic rioters severely beat him, but since he was a man of importance, the Catholic priest rounded up those who took part in the beating and made them do penance by climbing the steps of the Catholic Church on their knees and praying for forgiveness all the time. Grandmother described this to us. As I recall, it was of riots and beatings and the resulting bad times that caused both families to decide to come to America.
