[NEGHR 19:221 ``Early Marriages and Births at Scituate, Mass''] Edward Wanton had George, 25 Aug 1667, William, 15 Sept 1670, Elizabeth, 16 Sept 1668, John, 24 Dec 1672, Sarah & Margaret, twins, 22 Sept 1674. At Boston: Edward, 13 Sept 1658, Joseph, 1 May 1664. At Scituate, also: Hannah, 25 July 1667, Michael, 9 April 1679, Stephen, 5 March 1682, Philip, 9 May 1686.
[NEHGR 30:423] From documents still on record in York county, Me, it seems that John Smith Sen, was of Casco under Cleeve's government and that in 1653 his wife was Joan, sister apparently of Edward Wanton (? Wanerton, see Hist. Saco, p. 43)
[NEHGR 34:28-29] A law ws made in 1658 [presumably in Boston], that no inhabitant entertain amu person commonly called a Quaker, under penalty pf 5 pounds or whipping. Edward Wanton lived in Brattle Street, and at his house Friends meetings were held before they were allowed to have a meeting-house; indeed, as early as May 4, 1664, four uears after the execution of Mary Dyer. Many arrests were made at his house. He was the father of William Wanton, governor of Rhode Island, the ancestor of three other governors of TI of the mane of Wanton. He was on e of the officers under the gallows at the execution of Mary Dyer, and was so affected that he became a Friend.
[NEHGR 53:428] Robert Barkerm 2nd 1 April 1697, Hannah Wanton, daughter of Edward Wanton and his 2nd wife [sic] Elizabeth of Schituate Mass. Hannah was b. 25 July 1677, and d. 16 Aug 1726.
